Ernest Trova (1927-2009) was a self-trained American surrealist and pop art painter, printmaker, and sculptor. Best known for his signature image and figure series, "The Falling Man," Trova considered his entire output to be a single work in progress. His "Falling Man" series of works, "about man at his most imperfect", featured an armless human figure, that appeared in his sculptures, paintings and prints. In October 1963 his one-man show, "Falling Man Paintings," was the inaugural exhibition of the Pace Gallery on West 57th Street in Manhattan; it sold out, with the works purchased by the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the architect Philip Johnson and others.
